Are Internet Gamblers at Risk of Gambling Disorders?

While the legality of online gambling in the United States has been debated for years, there are certain types of games that are already legalized in the state of Ohio. In January of 2023, the state will launch its first online sports betting site. It is not yet known whether Ohio will also offer other games.

A small number of Internet gamblers, however, may be at risk of gambling disorders. Research is needed to determine the prevalence of such disorder and identify its causes. Gambling problems are characterized by impulsivity and high risk-taking behaviors.

One of the key factors is the type of game played. Games of skill, which involve the use of prize money, are not considered gambling. This distinction is crucial. The Internet has enabled easy access to large amounts of betting options, and rapid feedback. Some games of skill are illegal, though.

Several studies have shown that Internet gamblers are more likely to experience gambling problems than non-gamblers. These problems are associated with higher rates of alcohol and drug use, and disability.

Some Internet problem gamblers have reported having a history of other problems before they began to gamble online. Moreover, Internet gamblers are more likely to engage in other risk-taking behaviours.

A study conducted by LaPlante DA examined the relationship between involvement and gambling problems in a database of real-world Internet gamblers. Researchers found that Internet gamblers who were highly involved were more likely to be at risk of problems.
